How to Begin Meditation:

3 easy steps

           Many people struggle with getting started on meditation. I know for me it was tough getting started. I felt like my mind was like a monkey, jumping from place to place and never remaining still. It took me several months to achieve stillness in my mind. But after I got the hang of it, my stress level took a huge dip. I had never felt better. Here are three simple ideas to help you kick start your meditation practice.

  1. Start small.  As I said before, I really struggled when I first started. It was hard to sit still and quiet for so long. So I shortened the amount of time from 30 minutes to 15 minutes. It was still a little tough, so I shrunk my time down to only five minutes. It worked so much better. I did this for a few days and then went up to ten minutes. Now I can successfully meditate for 30 minutes.
  1. No distractions.  Pick a place where you will be alone for the time period you plan on meditating for. Tell your family you need a little bit of “me” time. Shut off your phone, TV, and any other distracting noise. There are a few tracks on Youtube that have helped me focus more and even feel more peaceful. This Youtube video is just one of the many you can find there.
  1. Focus on your own breath.  Close your eyes and release all thoughts from your mind. Take a deep breath and slowly release it. Listen to yourself breathing. Place your focus on your breathing and in no time, you’ll be in a peaceful state.
